About This Data Size Converter
This tool supports 15 data storage/transfer units across 3 categories for instant conversion:
- Decimal (SI): Bit (b), Byte (B), Kilobyte (KB), Megabyte (MB), Gigabyte (GB), Terabyte (TB), Petabyte (PB) - based on powers of 1000
- Binary (IEC): Kibibyte (KiB), Mebibyte (MiB), Gibibyte (GiB), Tebibyte (TiB), Pebibyte (PiB) - based on powers of 1024
- Bits: Kilobit (Kb), Megabit (Mb), Gigabit (Gb) - commonly used for network bandwidth
All results update in real-time as you type. Click any row in the table to copy its value.
KB vs KiB: What's the Difference?
The terms "KB", "MB", and "GB" are often used ambiguously. There are actually two different standards:
- Decimal (SI): 1 KB = 1,000 Bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 Bytes - used by hard drive manufacturers and for network bandwidth
- Binary (IEC): 1 KiB = 1,024 Bytes, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 Bytes - used by operating systems and for RAM
This is why a 128 GB phone shows only ~119 GiB of available storage. The manufacturer measures in decimal (128,000,000,000 bytes), while the OS displays in binary (~119.2 GiB).
Common Data Size Conversions
1 Byte (B) = 8 Bits (b)
1 KB = 1,000 B | 1 KiB = 1,024 B
1 MB = 1,000,000 B | 1 MiB = 1,048,576 B
1 GB = 1,000,000,000 B | 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 B
1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 B | 1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 B
Bandwidth: 100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/s (note: Mb = megabit, MB = megabyte)
Real-World Storage Reference
- A high-resolution photo: ~3-5 MB
- An MP3 song: ~3-8 MB
- A 1080p movie: ~1.5-4 GB
- A 4K movie: ~20-50 GB
- 128 GB phone actual usable: ~119 GiB (before OS overhead)
- 1 TB hard drive shows as: ~931 GiB
